The mission of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh is to improve the care and treatment of patients with heart, lung, and esophageal diseases. The Department provides an excellent research environment for fellows, residents, and students seeking training in cardiothoracic surgery research.
Ongoing research incorporates the disciplines of molecular biology, proteomics, immunology, and tissue engineering, among others. Specific topics addressed include research into robotics for epicardial interventions, the development of pediatric ventricular-assist devices, serum proteomic biomarkers for lung cancer detection and prognosis, outcomes of radiosurgical treatment of lung cancer, biomarkers for esophageal cancer progression and prognosis, minimally invasive esophagectomy, and clinical risk factors for Barrett’s esophagus in a primary care setting.
